Why I Train

What I'm actually after

Functional movement first. I want to move like an athlete — coordinated, capable, not just strong in a narrow range of motion. Visible definition is the byproduct, not the goal. The lifting builds the shape; cycling and diet handle the leanness. I'm not chasing mass. I want a lean, defined frame that moves well, and strength is the engine underneath both.

The back constraint

No conventional deadlifts, ever. I have a back history, and no short-term strength gain is worth a long-term setback. I train the posterior chain through seated leg curls and hip-hinge patterns. Anything that pulls at my low back, I stop. Quality over volume — this matters more for me than for most people, and I build my program around it rather than around it.

The pull-up story

My first unassisted pull-up is the headline skill goal of this block. My pulling base is decent — lat pulldowns and rows have given me a foundation. The gap is grip strength and the specific neuromuscular pattern of a dead hang to lockout. I'm working the path: dead hang → scapular pull-up → eccentric negatives → assisted machine → unassisted.

The long game is 30 pull-ups. The 12-week block gets me to the first rep. Everything after that is volume.

What I bring to this

120 push-ups every day. A strong core routine I've maintained consistently: 60s plank, 60s side-plank each side, 60s dead bugs. I'm a solid, consistent lifter — not a beginner, not elite. I did Seattle-to-Portland on a bike in a single day. My cardiovascular base and recovery capacity are well above average.

I've been conservative on my assessment numbers. My real working weights sit a notch above what I tested. The program accounts for this — early weeks discover real baselines, later weeks push into genuine territory.

How I think about progress

Strength going up is how functional movement and definition both happen — they're not separate goals, they're downstream effects of the same process. I train the last few reps genuinely hard in a moderate rep range. I log everything so I can see what's actually improving and what's stalling. The data goes to Claude monthly for evaluation. The site is the collector; the chat is where the reasoning happens.
